I was rushing through my reading because I wanted to hurry up and get to what I think is the "good stuff," more pleasant to my ears.
And then I stopped myself and went back and reread because I realized I was acting just like a child who doesn't want to listen to the important stuff her parents have to say.
There's always a lesson and a message from God for me.
As a parent, I work really hard to do just what Solomon is doing in Proverbs. I really want to teach my kids how to live a Godly life. It's not easy, but I hope and pray that as they grow up, valuing God and His will for their lives will be their sure foundation no matter what they face.
My child, keep your father’s commandment,
and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
21
Bind them upon your heart always;
tie them around your neck.
22
When you walk, they[a] will lead you;
when you lie down, they[b] will watch over you;
and when you awake, they[c] will talk with you.
For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light,
and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life,
and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life,
If my kids learn to have an everyday faith full of grace, and they keep growing in Christ (no matter how old they get), with God's help, I will have passed on a very powerful and everlasting love that goes way beyond my own love for them.
A prayer for today-
Dear God,
Thank You for Your powerful and everlasting love for Your children.
Forgive me for all the ways I fall short as a parent, for all the ways I fall short of Your example of perfect love.
Shape me, mold me, transform me, and lead me to be the parent You need me to be.
I pray for my children. Help me teach them Your love and grace. Guide me in passing on an everyday faith that will be their rock in life.
Bind Your Words on their hearts, always. When they walk, lead them, Lord. When they lie down, watch over them, Lord. When they wake, speak to them, Lord. Keep their hearts open to Your Holy Spirit. May they know You and love You with all that they are, and may they grow and live out Your will for their lives.
You are our lamp, Lord. Your teaching is light.
In Jesus' name I pray,
Amen
Peace of Christ,
