Hosea 1-7

So, this is where I am in reading the Bible right now.  Since I am starting a new book today, I  used Know Your Bible: All 66 Books Explained and Applied to give me a little heads up on what I am reading.  Hosea is one of the the Old Testament prophets.

The Word of the Lord comes to him, and he shares it.  Basically, the kingdom of Israel and God's chosen people are messing up pretty badly and God is upset.  Hosea marries a promiscuous woman.  She cheats on him and nearly destroys their marriage, getting into all kinds of trouble.  God uses Hosea's unfaithful marriage as an illustration for His relationship with His people.  My first reaction was, "Thank goodness that's not us today," but keep reading...

It sounds to me like God's people are stubborn and unfaithful.  They look to other things instead of being dependent on God.  Adultery, swearing, deceit, bloodshed, worshiping other things besides God...just a few of the things that God is calling to our attention.  God feels like His people are cheating on Him, similar to Hosea's adulterous wife.

The message I get from today?  God wants to be our one and only, all powerful, Sovereign Lord.  He wants the most intimate relationship with me, with us.  And the good news in the middle of the mess Hosea is talking about is that at any point, if and when God's people are willing to turn to Him in faithfulness, asking forgiveness, God is full of mercy for His people.

Let us acknowledge the Lord;
  let us press on to acknowledge him.

As surely as the sun rises,

    he will appear;

he will come to us like the winter rains,

    like the spring rains that water the earth.

A prayer for today-
Dear Lord and Savior,

Forgive me for being unfaithful to You and being lead astray by my ways in the world.  You alone, God, are my Lord and Savior.  Fill my heart with Your love, mercy, and grace.  Reveal the areas of my life you want to change and go to work.  You are my Redeemer.  I am looking and listening.

In the name of Jesus I pray,
Amen

Blessings,
